Unmissable nature getaways
Two sites stand out for their unique natural beauty. First is the Marais Poitevin, nicknamed the “Green Venice.” A traditional boat ride along its calm canals offers a true moment of relaxation. You will discover preserved flora and fauna at the gentle pace of the water. Guided by a local boatman who pushes the boat with a “pigouille,” you silently glide along shaded canals while learning about the wildlife, plants, and the magic of “fire on water,” a phenomenon where water lentils open as the boat passes.
Closer to the coast, the Forêt Domaniale des Pays de Monts is another highlight. This vast pine forest borders the coastline and offers numerous trails for family walks or sporty outings. Located just beside our campsite in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, it is perfect for recharging in the shade after a day at the beach.
Where to find the most beautiful coasts and ports?
The coastline is a must-see when discovering Vendée. Les Sables-d’Olonne is famous as the starting point of the iconic Vendée Globe sailing race. Its large marina, Port Olona, and long sandy beach make it a popular seaside resort for families. Every four years, the port becomes the center of the sailing world, with an extraordinary atmosphere during race departures. The vast sandy beaches invite both relaxation and water sports.
Further north, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie offers the charm of a traditional fishing port. The town is known for its sardines, whose fishing expertise is recognized in France’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visitors can experience local tradition and taste fresh fish. This sardine port, one of the most important in the region, takes pride in its Red Label certification, guaranteeing quality.
Between Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, the Vendée Coastline is a geological curiosity stretching over three kilometers. This rocky and jagged coast, with sites like “Trou du Diable,” can be explored on foot and contrasts with the long sandy beaches.
Cultural day trips in Vendée
For a cultural day trip, Puy du Fou is a must. This park offers grandiose shows depicting different historical periods. It constantly innovates with creations such as “Le Mime et l’Étoile,” internationally awarded, and the upcoming “L’Épée du Roi Arthur.” Between shows, you can wander through reconstructed historical villages where artisans share their skills – a true time travel experience for the whole family.
The Vendée islands are also cultural and natural treasures. Noirmoutier Island is accessible via the famous Passage du Gois, a unique tidal road. Its salt marshes, tended by local salt workers, showcase centuries of know-how and produce renowned salt. Watching the salt harvest is an authentic experience.
Île d’Yeu, further offshore, charms visitors with its wild coastline and small ports like Port de la Meule. For planning your day, our reception offers ticketing services for Puy du Fou and ferry crossings to Île d’Yeu.
Discover Vendée by bike
Cycling is an excellent way to explore Vendée at your own pace. The department is crossed by La Vélodyssée, a long bike route along the Atlantic coast. With over 1,800 km of safe bike paths, often flat and traffic-free, it’s perfect for family outings.
Our campsite, labeled Qualité Tourisme, is located along many of these routes, making it easy to reach forests, beaches, or nearby villages. To simplify your excursions, we offer on-site bike rental in partnership with a local provider – a simple way to discover Vendée’s landscapes.
Whatever your escape desires, Vendée will welcome you. At the end of your exploration days, the Tropicana team will greet you with friendliness and warmth. After all, your holiday is our passion!
